The
Pilates Method
Pilates
is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed
over ninety years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. It combines slow, precise
movements with specific breathing. The Pilates philosophy focuses on
training the mind and body to work together toward the goal of overall
fitness and well-being.

The Pilates
method comprises these basic principles:
Breathing
- Every movement has a breath. It helps to oxygenate the blood, relax
the muscles and avoid unnecessary tension, focuses the mind and allows
concentration on each task. Exhaling helps to activate the deep supporting
muscles.
Centering
- Refers to your "powerhouse", the abdominal, low back
and gluteus muscles. All movement should originate from a very strong
center.
Concentration
- Every movement requires your concentration and attention to ensure
that the specific area is working correctly. When we are mindful of
our movements the brain and body work harmoniously and effectively.
Control
- Every movement must have control. Flailing of limbs is counterproductive
and can lead to injury.
Flowing
Movement - Pilates teaches us to move with fluidity and grace as
each exercise flows one to the other.
Precision
- There is purpose to every movement. Every exercise has a specific
point at which it begins and ends.

Arc barrels,
Spine correctors, Spine supporters, Fitness circles and Thera-bands
are other pieces of equipment that can be incorporated into mat classes.

The CADILLAC
apparatus works movement awareness, core stability and challenges strength,
balance and coordination. Can be used as a workout on its own or along
with the other equipment.

The LADDER
BARREL challenges the body on all planes of movement, uses core conditioning
principles for everything from injury prevention to performance enhancement.
Can be used as workout by itself or along with mat, reformer or Cadillac
exercises.

CHAIRS
use movements that integrate the entire body. Greater neuromuscular
control and increased torso strength can be achieved. Great for rehab,
pre and post natal programs or used to intensify a workout.

The REFORMER
is a spring based apparatus which teaches the participant control and
balance while increasing muscular strength.
